The Company Overview

Georgian Railway Telecom LLC was founded in August 2004 by Georgian Railway LLC, hence the name of it. The founder transferred to GRT’s possession the fiber optic network built all along the railroad of Georgia, covering the major part of the country.

The company began operations in 2005 after installation of Ericsson-Axxesit equipment on fiber optic network on STM4 level. The network was connected to GRT partner’s networks in Azerbaijan, Armenia and Turkey.

Under the decision #614/7 of GNCC (dated 2004 November 12) GRT was given license to use Numbering Resource (numbering 560000 – 569999, with 10.000 subscribers).

In October 2004 SDH (STM 4 level) network building project between GRT and Axxesit-Ericsson was signed and after it was established, in May 2005 the first international trunk (TEC) began functioning due to interconnection between GRT and its partner networks in Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan. 

In the beginning of 2006 the new international contract was signed that covered all backup issues about delivering internet-service to Georgia through Azerbaijan territory with alternate way – TEC, GRT, Delta Telecom, IIS.
During this year the fiber optic network of company became more sophisticated by installing on it Edgecore switches. 

In addition, with expanding its network and business activities, GRT was one of the winners in tender announced by LEPL Fund "Deer Leap" of Ministry of Education, focused on delivering internet-service to secondary schools in Ozurgeti, Guria (one of the western regions of Georgia). 
It is worth to admit that GRT is the first ISP which could access in that region. 

In 2007 GRT started providing DSL service in Ozurgeti and in Spring of 2007 the number of customers consistently grew. 
During this year, GRT entered in other town of Guria – Lanchkhuti, where the company built Automatic Telephone Exchange and for September 2007 GRT could deliver internet to Lanchkhuti, Ozurgeti, Samtredia.

GRT became the winner of another tender announced by LEPL Fund "Deer Leap" of the Ministry of Education. The goal of that tender was to provide internet-service and fiber-optic trunk (Tbilisi-Batumi-Poti) for schools, within the frames of the projet to provide internet all over the country.

In order to help and develop the schools of Georgia, GRT started providnig free of charge internet-service to schools of LEPL Fund "Deer Leap" for 2 years.

Later GRT further upgraded its network by installing CWDM equipment of BTI-Systems. This technical solution increased the network capacity and enabled the company to transmit several Gigabits per second through its channels. 
Due to the frequent upgrades today GRT can transmit about 20 Gbps data over its highest-performance network.

It is very important to admit GRT’s activities to international direction. The company was active participant and member of all major exhibitions, conferences or other events in telecommunication field. 

As a result, GRT gained close business relation with many of leading european ISPs and Telecoms, 
and after aquiring a Point of Presence (PoP) in Kleyer 90, Ancotel (Frankfurt, Germany) - collocation place where all major Telecoms are presented, GRT significantly extended the areas of its service delivery. 
The company started serving global customers, like world famous telecom operators, large banks and organizations providing them with the international leased line service from Europe to the Caucasus region. 


GRT is very active in neighbor countries, the major part of Internet consumed by the customers in Armenia is transited there by GRT.

Licenses

Georgian Railway Telecom LLC is registered and fully certified to provide telecommunications and data communications services according to the following licenses issued by Georgian National Communications Commission:

  • License #1419 – to provide data communication and Internet cable network services;
  • License #1420 – provision of local phone communication system and network services;
  • License #1421 – provision of international and long distance communication services;
  • License #1422 – the owner of local and international trunk with twisted pair coaxial and fiber optical network.
